Squash planted out

Wonder what type of fruit, if any, they'll produce?

Wallflower seed sown

Morning Glories planted out

The first batch died as I think it was too cold when I planted them out on 14 April. These plants are from the batch I sowed on 01 May.

Houttuynia Cordata update

It's strange that one pot of Houttuynia is more advanced than the other, since they both came out of the same pot I bought last year. One died back before the other last winter, as well. Anyway, I'm glad that the less advanced plant is showing more signs of life now.

Another attempt at onions

The spring onion seed I sowed earlier failed to come up, possibly due to it being the wettest April for 100 years. I sowed another batch today.

Tomatoes planted out

A little later than usual this year due to the very cold, wet weather. Today is the first nice day this spring.

The plants nearest the camera are from the second sowing, so they're a bit smaller.

Seed failures

None of the Phlox or Aster seeds I sowed on 17 April germinated. This may have been because the compost got sodden as a result of the compost bags being left in the garden. I tried to cover the open bag up, but the large amounts of rain leaked in. I have been trying to dry off some of the compost, and today I sowed some more Phlox and Aster. Also, none of the marigold seed came up, so I sowed some more of those a few days ago.

The French bean plants have been growing well, but I've been reluctant to plant them out because the nights have been cold. As a result I'm a little concerned that the plants have gone a bit beyond their best, so I sowed some more seed today. Next year I should sow the French beans a little later, around the 1st of May.

Strawberry update

This is the strawb that escaped from the strawb bed last year before I dug them out.

Second batch of spuds planted

I planted the second batch of spuds today. This time I remembered to put some compost in the trench before planting the spuds.

After doing this I noticed some of the spuds from the first batch planted on 07 April were sprouting, so I lifted the netting that I had laid over them, then built a cage of netting around the bed.

Wettest April on record

Last month was the wettest April since records began in 1910. It certainly seemed that we had heavy rain every day. Despite this, the hosepipe ban remains in force.

The bad weather has meant that I haven't been putting the young plants out much during the day.

The wet weather is set to continue, according to the forecast.
