Seedling updates, and potted up

Phlox

Impatiens

These are the seeds from the packet I bought. None of the seeds I saved from last year's plants (sown in another batch) came up. In the batch above, one seed germinated early, but the remainder of the seedlings above came up much later. Most of the seeds didn't germinate.

Courgettes

Asters

Today I potted up all the seedlings above.

First sowing of the year

Today I sowed the impatiens seeds I collected last year, plus those from a packet I bought last year but didn't use, and some pepper seeds collected from a red pepper I bought from the supermarket.

Impatiens update

As mentioned in an earlier post, the impatiens which I potted up and put in my cold frame are not doing very well. However, these impatiens which have stayed indoors are romping ahead and will need to be potted up urgently.

Friday, 26 March 2010

Today I potted up the mystery seedlings, as they seemed to be getting rather large. 8 of the 16 seeds I sowed have sprouted, with those sown flat producing 5 seedlings, while those sown on their side produced 3.

I also potted up 22 impatiens seedlings.

It was cold working in the garden today, and the forecast for next week says we may have snow. I put some of the seedlings in this 'cold frame' type of thing (hope snails don't get in), and the rest went in the front porch.

This time last year it was mild and I had already planted the spuds. This year the cold seems reluctant to let go, and I'm still waiting to put the spuds into the ground.

Impatiens sprouting

Some mould has formed on the surface of the compost - I think this is because I poured the dried seed pods into the compost along with the seeds. Hope it doesn't affect the seeds or seedlings.

First sowing of the year

I'm already running behind on the schedule I planned out on 31 December, but today I sowed the impatiens seeds I collected last autumn. I may buy some more impatiens seed, as last year's plants didn't produce as much seed as I expected, and I think I all the seed I got came from plants of the same colour.
