Charlottes flowering
There appear to be flowers forming on the Charlottes. Apparently the potatoes should be harvested in about 2 weeks from this point, although some sources say they should be left until the foliage dies, but that seems a bit risky to me. Edit: I think the 'allow the foliage to die' advice relates to main crop potatoes, not earlies.
Fox war escalates!
The fox war, which was previously limited to them digging holes around the garden and using the garden as a toilet (unfortunately the two activities do not occur in the same locations), seems to have escalated to target the gnome population. I'm assuming it was a fox that knocked this concrete gnome about a foot from where he was originally positioned.
Despite sustaining facial injuries, the victim remains stoic about the threat to garden peace, and has appealed for restraint among the gnome community.

Primrose seeds sown
I'm assuming that since the seedpods on the Primroses have turned red, the seeds are ready to be sown. The seeds are green, I would have expected them to be black, but I sowed some anyway. I think I read that you don't cover the seeds with soil - will find out eventually if this works. EDIT: See entry for 09 June 2009

Pentlands earthed up
Yesterday evening I earthed up the Pentlands. I read that it's easier to earth up at dusk because the potato leaves close up at night. I put some of my home made compost around the plants, then covered that with the soil which I had excavated to make the trench, then using a hoe I pulled the soil up around the plants. Tried to make a groove along the top edge of the earthed up area to catch the water.
